Draguignan is a city with many faces: on the one hand, it has the charm of a Provençal town, on the other, the dynamism of a historic administrative center. Located in the Var region, approximately 40 km from the Mediterranean Sea, Draguignan offers a surprisingly rich mix of heritage, nature, and cultural life.
Historical and Cultural Heritage
Draguignan’s old town center is characterized by its medieval fortifications and narrow streets, with the Tour de l’Horloge (clock tower) as its iconic landmark, a recognizable symbol of the city. There are also several chapels, such as the Chapelle Saint-Sauveur, which dates back to the 12th century and is listed as a historical monument. The Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Peuple is another religious building with a neo-Gothic facade and a rich history, including one related to gratitude after an epidemic.
Significant Museums
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Draguignan houses an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, and archaeological finds. Housed in a former bishop’s summer palace, the museum recently reopened. The Musée de l’Artillerie is another highlight: it chronicles the history of artillery from ancient France to the present day, featuring cannons, uniforms, ammunition, and tactical reconstructions.
Atmosphere & Quality of Life
Draguignan isn’t just a destination for tourists; it also breathes the life of the locals. The wide avenues lined with plane trees, pedestrian squares, markets, and terraces give the city center a warm, inviting atmosphere. Moreover, the city’s location is strategic: you’re close to both the mountains (such as the massifs around Dracénie) and the Mediterranean Sea. For nature lovers, there are hiking trails to viewpoints and hills around Draguignan.
Around Draguignan lie several villages, each showcasing Provence in its own unique way. Nestled among vineyards, hills, and ancient cobblestone roads, you’ll find tranquil squares, medieval alleyways, charming markets, and panoramic views that invite you to get lost in the landscape. Each village has its own atmosphere and story: one intimate and village-like, the next historic and vibrant, but always warm, authentic, and rooted in the Provençal rhythm of the good life.
Callas
Callas is a small, peaceful mountain village nestled against a green hillside, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and lavender fields. The atmosphere is relaxed and village-like, with narrow streets leading to charming squares where fountains gently gurgle. From the higher parts of the village, you can look out over an undulating landscape that invites you to walk, cycle, or simply slow down. Callas is a place where you can smell the aroma of bread from the local bakery in the morning, and where, after a day outdoors, you can relax on a terrace, just as the locals do – peacefully and with time for each other.
Figanières
Figanières is a friendly and welcoming village nestled in greenery, with a historic center full of stone houses, colorful flower boxes, and squares overlooking the valleys between Draguignan and Fayence. The area is a paradise for nature lovers: hiking trails crisscross hills and forests, and along the way you’ll see vineyards and olive groves glistening in the sun.
Les Arcs-sur-Argens
Les Arcs-sur-Argens is a charming medieval village that surprises with its maze of alleyways, stone gates, old watchtowers, and idyllic stepped streets. The upper-lying neighborhood of Le Parage exudes pure history, as if time has gently slowed down. Downstairs, in the modern area, you’ll find cozy restaurants, shops, and terraces under the plane trees. Les Arcs lies on the Argens River and is surrounded by vineyards from some of the best estates in the area.
Le Muy
Le Muy is strategically located between the coast and the hills, making it an ideal starting point for excursions to the beaches of the Côte d’Azur or inland with its forests and rocky outcrops. The village itself has a lively character, especially on market days, when the squares are filled with stalls brimming with Provençal scents and colors. You’ll find old buildings, charming terraces, and a relaxed, authentic village atmosphere.
