Vidauban is a charming Provençal village that has developed significantly in recent years, yet has managed to retain its authentic atmosphere. Situated in the heart of the Dracénie region, among forests, vineyards, and rolling hills, it’s a perfect base for exploring both the hinterland and the Côte d’Azur. The village is only 30–35 km from the Mediterranean Sea and offers a combination of tranquility, nature, and a vibrant local culture.
Historical and cultural heritage
The old town of Vidauban is a charming maze of narrow streets, stone facades, and charming squares. The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste, with its characteristic bell tower, forms the heart of the village. The Chapel of Sainte-Brigitte, situated on a hill just outside the town center, is also a remarkable monument. This charming chapel offers not only a glimpse into the region’s religious history but also a magnificent panoramic view of the vast Argens plain and the surrounding vineyards.
On the edge of the village, you’ll find remains of old waterworks and traditional Provençal farmhouses, which bear witness to Vidauban’s agricultural past, primarily focused on wine, olives, and cork production.
Nature & Excursions
Vidauban is nestled in a green area, ideal for hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers. The Massif des Maures and the Dracénie hills offer countless hiking trails, cycle paths, and mountain bike trails. The walk to Sainte-Brigitte is particularly popular, an accessible route for the whole family.
The Argens River also runs alongside Vidauban. In summer, it’s a wonderful spot for picnicking, swimming, or canoeing. For a more adventurous experience, head to the Pennafort Gorges or the Plaine des Maures nature reserve, a unique landscape with red rocks, rare turtle species, and unique flora.
Vineyards & Local Culture
Vidauban is renowned for its wine: the village lies in the heart of the Côtes de Provence appellation. Numerous wine estates are located in the surrounding area, ranging from small family-run vineyards to larger châteaux with modern tasting rooms. Well-known names include Château d’Astros, Château de Chaberts, and Domaine des Fouquettes. Many of these estates offer tours, tastings, and events, particularly during the summer months.
The Vidauban market, held every Sunday, is a vibrant local scene. Here you’ll discover Provençal specialties, fresh produce, olives, sun-ripened vegetables, and artisanal products. On the many terraces, you’ll experience the relaxed lifestyle of the southern French.
Atmosphere & Quality of life
Vidauban is a lively village, yet never overcrowded. The wide avenues lined with plane trees, cafés, boutiques, and shady squares create a relaxed atmosphere. Its central location also puts you within easy reach of charming surrounding towns such as Les Arcs, Lorgues, Le Thoronet, Taradeau, and, of course, the coastal towns of Sainte-Maxime, Fréjus, and Saint-Tropez.
